What players say about Supplice

Supplice is a well-regarded retro-style shooter that effectively channels the spirit of classic Doom while introducing a unique sci-fi atmosphere and strategic combat. While the sprawling, maze-like level design and narrative delivery via text terminals divide player opinion, the core gunplay and soundtrack are widely praised as standout features.

What players like

  • Satisfying, strategic combat 32 of 60 reviews

Reviewers frequently highlight the punchy, effective weaponry and the necessity of managing different tools for specific enemy types, which keeps combat engaging.

  • High-quality soundtrack 28 of 60 reviews

The music is consistently described as a highlight, with many players noting it as atmospheric, energetic, and a significant factor in the game's overall quality.

  • Detailed retro aesthetic 22 of 60 reviews

Players appreciate the cohesive sci-fi visual style and the effort put into the level art, which captures the feel of classic 80s and 90s shooters.

What players criticise

  • Confusing navigation 25 of 60 reviews

Many players report that the levels are excessively large and labyrinthine, leading to frequent instances of getting lost or difficulty in finding objectives.

  • Excessive text 18 of 60 reviews

A notable portion of feedback criticizes the heavy reliance on reading long entries in terminals, which some feel breaks the game's pacing.

  • Lack of movement options 12 of 60 reviews

The absence of jump and crouch mechanics is a point of contention; some players find this limitation restrictive compared to modern expectations.

Best for: Players who enjoy old-school, complex retro shooters with a focus on exploration, labyrinthine level design, and sci-fi atmosphere.

Not for you if: Players who prefer modern movement mechanics like jumping and crouching, or those who dislike having to read narrative text during gameplay.

Description

Supplice is everything that you would ever want from a ‘90s-stylized shooter: fast-paced action with big guns and even bigger enemies, wrapped in the most stylish pixel art in this part of the Universe. In other words, if the original DOOM had a hot sister, Supplice would be her.

The story of Supplice will bring you to the far corners of the Universe as humanity has outgrown its cradle. As a part of a terraforming team, it was your job to find and prepare new worlds for colonization. While unleashing bio-mechanical horrors was not on your terraforming to-do list, saving the world will now have to be in your resume.

Every encounter with the mecha-mutant fiends will be a swift and brutal affair. Luckily, you’re an engineer and you’ll have a lot of tools to solve such ‘practical problems’, from industrial drills and flamethrowers to conventional firearms and experimental weaponry.

And if that is not enough, there are always alternative modes. Need someone to cover your back? Change your minigun into a stationary sentry gun! Need some breathing room? Expel flammable gas from your flamethrower and set it aflame for a toasty, enemy-free space!

Fantastic game. The game story loosely reminds me of System Shock meets Doom. I don't want to spoil anything but feels great. The whole thing is original. I personally cheated Jump back into the game to make the vibe 10x better with jump and no major breaking of plots. Highly Recommended.

I’ve only played to level 2. At the time of this review but I’m confident I have enough sample time to talk about it.

I play on PC or my AYN Thor. I’ve played with controller and with mouse keyboard. AYN Thor on Game Native and runs great!

The main con is the color palette. Full disclosure I’m color blind. Don’t know if that affects it. But what bothers me is the whole game just seems to be grays and browns. Not very interesting to look at.

Another small one is there is no fun stuff. Duke Nukem is one of my favorites. I think what makes it so fun is the little things. The strip club, explosive barrels, bottles, glasses, mirrors, ect. The little things. It makes shooting stuff or playing fun. This game doesn’t have any of that. It’s just point and shoot. Which is fine, it’s just lacking that spice.

Everything else is pretty awesome about the game. Level design is one thing that really pisses me off in shooters because I just want to shoot stuff. I hate getting lost because I can’t figure out where to go. But the level design is good here. If you are ever lost there is an objective marker. The combat is super fun. Difficulty so far is perfect.

If you like Doom classic, you will like this. It’s a little visually dark and so far the first 2 levels look the same to me. But shooting stuff I genuinely fun which is what matters most. I’d say 7/10. If you want to shoot stuff this is the game for you. If you expect more from your shooters, you may get bored fast.

I haven't finished the game as unfortunately I lost my saves and will have to restart, but I do REALLY recommend it. The shooting is great fun and the levels, while a bit too big for my liking, are gorgeous and a lot of fun to run around. I do think this game is limiting itself somewhat by not allowing jumping but the game is still so fun I don't mind it. Also the music. Oh my lord. It's SO good.
