Not as good as Quake 1, and the story/atmosphere is atrociously bland, but it still stomps 90% of FPS games that release nowadays for half the price. The new content added by Machine Games also of course adds a load of replayability, and it's fun with friends to play through either the entire campaign, the new wave-based horde mode, or just boogie on down in classic deathmatch with bots or friends.
The weapon sandbox is quite fun and weapons are crunchy and impactful, albeit a bit bland, but it's always satisfying gibbing enemies and corpses. There's also a pretty extensive behind-the-scenes gallery for concept art and development history, as well as a model viewer allowing you to easily see the changes the remaster made. This time around it allows you to even change your player model in the singleplayer campaign and be a Bitterwoman rather than a Bitterman, so that's always a plus for me.

the soundtrack is probably in my top 30 albums of all time and mogs the hell out of quake 1's boring ass ambience and whatever which only gets the praise it does because trent reznor worked on it. sonic mayhem would make trent his ♥♥♥♥♥. the game is good, too.

Back in the day, Quake 2 was the reason I bought a Voodoo 2. I remember saving up allowance, eventually being able to buy the thing, then installing it into my computer. When all was said and done, I fired up the game and wondered why everything still looked and ran the same. That's when I learned that I had to manually switch the renderer. That experience of switching from software rendering to hardware rendering and seeing the colored lighting for the first time was mind-blowing. I spent the next year playing nothing but Quake 2.

This is still a great game. It might not have the legacy of Quake 1 or 3, but I probably spent over a thousand hours playing Q2 multiplayer and I still love it. This remaster looks great, feels good, and has a small but active multiplayer community.

Harder than other FPSs of the time, but still a blast. I don't like the mission system: it forces you to backtrack on older levels just to find and press a button that you totally forgot it was there. I had to use the walkthrough several times.
I'm also shamefully savescumming, I don't see how I could survive any other way.
There is something cumbersome about how this game plays; perhaps the backtracing, the slowness of swapping weapon animation, together with how fast the enemy behind the next corner can kill you.
I suck at FPSs, but still enjoying it, though.

For me personally Quake II has always teetered on a fine line between fun and mid. It becomes very repetitive but as long as you keep moving and shooting it's absorbing and worth the price of admission. This remaster is excellent and fixes all of the annoying issues with the original version and the new episode, Call of the Machine, is probably the best part. Well done again Nightdive.

Quake II was a fun ride. I'm a sucker for SCI-FI, and this game is pure sci-fi action greatness. Different from the first's gothic/medieval atmosphere(which was also amazing), so I understand if fans of that wouldn't like this direction, but for sci-fi fans like myself, this was a fun FPS to play through as a precursor to the next main singleplayer entry in the series, QUAKE 4, which was just as fun to me. Nostalgia!
Badass guns, and a badass soundtrack to go with it. Beats most modern FPS still. No added nonsense, just pure sci-fi fps fun just as it's supposed to be. Long live QUAKE!

Don't get me wrong, the railgun is good, the music is also good, and the death match is probably solid.

That being said, this is probably the most dull fps i've played, levels and enemies just kinda blended together and i wound up in a state where i only did everything i could for the game so i wouldn't have to touch it again.

A classic game that pushed first-person shooters forward especially in online multiplayer mode. As a singleplayer game though, the first Quake game has superior weapon design, enemy design, level design, and overall theme. Still a great game, of course, but I just wish Quake II wasn't such a radical departure from the orginal Quake.

Hell yeah. Played this thing multiple times from beginning to the end, and the remaster is absolutely incredible. They improved everything, in the best way possible. You can see that they did it out of love for the title, not just for quick cashgrab.

Although Doom 1 and 2 are quite playable in my opinion, Quake 2 feels so insanely modern in comparison I believe it stands head and shoulders above them in terms of being playable by a modern audience.

This game set the new standard, and that's not even taking into account engine lineage.

Quake II feels like Id Software looked at Quake I, and said "Hey, what if we made a sequel that's significantly more unenjoyable/annoying to play?".

The guns don't feel as good to use, damn near ALL of the enemies are a chore to fight, and the levels don't feel as engaging.

This next thing is purely a me thing, but the shift away from Quake I's dark fantasy theming into Quake II's sci-fi theming REALLY disappointed me as I think that's what made the first game so unique to me.

All in all, Quake II is a very flawed continuation from Quake I's masterful design.

The original Quake was a gothic Lovecraftian nightmare. Quake II abandons all of that for basic sci-fi, making it feel less like a sequel and more like an entirely different thing. Thankfully, it's still a fantastic shooter. The weapons are excellent, the campaign is more cohesive than the original, and the action remains fast, responsive, and satisfying nearly 30 years later. The Railgun alone is worth the price of admission. While this may not feel totally like Quake, judged on its own merits, Quake II is still one of the best FPS games of its era.

Super smooth on modern hardware, fully compatible, and has lots of nice quality of life updates that make it a great play again. Quake II is such an awesome game.

You boot it up and 5 minutes later you're blasting Strogg into chunks with a super shotgun while metal music is kicking. No crafting. No battle pass. No "talk to the villagers." Just pure f*cking violence.

The Strogg are still some of my true favorite enemies in gaming too. They're disgusting. They're ugly. They're half machine, half corpse, and every weapon in your arsenal feels specifically designed to turn them into spare parts.

ohh man, the guns. The shotgun. The super shotgun. The railgun. Absolute p*rnography.

What I love most is that Quake 2 never wastes your time. It knows exactly what it is. Here's a gun. Here's a horrible cyborg. Solve the problem.

Thankfully it goes straight to the point, you never get lost, the compass is really helpful and well made.

The enhanced version is fantastic too. It cleans modernises everything without messing with the soul of the game, runs great, includes a ton of content (all the expansions and Quake II 64), and even comes with the original versions if you want to play it exactly like it's 1998 on a PC that sounds like a tractor engine.

It is really worth it, i recommend buying the whole Quake saga when it is on sale, you wont regret it.

I've finished this game more times than I can count and every time I tell myself "just one level before bed."

That is always a lie.

10/10, the Strogg have been getting slaughtered over and over again for almost 30 years and I'm still not tired of it.

This was the game that got me addicted to multiplayer FPS deathmatch back in the late 90s. EDIT: Quake II 64 is pretty fun but not enough for me to recommend this game.

In all aspect except the technical, this game is worse than Quake 1. The guns are slower to swap and take longer between shots to shoot. Most of the enemies hit scan. The game itself looks uglier than the first game.

The main game is the most bearable campaign to play, the original mission pack are miserable, and while the new DLC from MachineGames is pretty it still suffers from Quake 2's dull gameplay.

If you have to play it, then play it with a friend at least.

disclaimer: i'm friends with someone close to the doom and quake remasters, so i'm a little biased, but:

those crazy b*stards, they did it - they made quake 2 a fun game to play. the compass gets rid of the constant aimless backtracking to find what door that last button opened (now that microsoft owns activision, they should add the same compass to hexen 1 and 2!!!!). the machinegun's recoil doesn't just move your camera up. the enhanced models by nightdive are, like with their work on quake 1, fantastic. the "id vault" where you get to look at all the models and swap between new and old versions is a lot of fun, and the descriptions of each enemy/weapon give me the same satisfaction i got reading them in physical strategy guides as a kid. the dynamic shadows are subtle but really effective. just an all around good time!
