Ankh Guardian - Treasure of the Demon's Temple is a side-scrolling action adventure that combines traditional platforming with exploration and a distinctive wall-restoration mechanic. Developed and published by TOM CREATE CO., LTD., the game takes players into an ancient temple filled with damaged structures, concealed treasures, hostile creatures, and supernatural dangers. Rather than concentrating entirely on reaching the end of each stage, it encourages players to examine their surroundings and interact with the temple itself, giving exploration a more important role than might initially be expected.

The adventure takes place in a world shaped by conflict between ancient gods. Farasis, a benevolent deity, is killed by the terrifying god Zemet, causing darkness to spread across the world. Before his death, Farasis uses his remaining strength to create a magical sword. Generations later, a young adventurer receives a divine message that leads to the Temple of Farasis. This straightforward premise establishes the player's mission without overwhelming the action with lengthy storytelling. The mythology instead works as a backdrop for the journey through the mysterious ruins.

The most memorable element is the ability to interact with damaged walls and murals. Certain portions of the environment can be broken apart, while damaged murals can also be repaired. Searching these locations may reveal treasure and other secrets, making careful observation an important part of completing each area. It creates a satisfying contrast between destruction and restoration. Instead of simply smashing everything in sight, players must understand how different environmental elements contribute to exploration and progression.

This mechanic gives the stages more purpose than simply moving from left to right. Hidden treasures reward curiosity, while restoring murals provides an additional objective for players who enjoy thoroughly investigating levels. It also creates a light puzzle element because suspicious sections of the scenery deserve attention. The concept is relatively easy to understand, but it helps establish an identity that distinguishes the game from side-scrollers built exclusively around combat and precision jumping.

Progression follows a structured format, with a special boss encounter appearing after every eight stages. These battles provide useful breaks from regular exploration and act as milestones throughout the adventure. The predictable progression toward another boss gives players something larger to anticipate while moving through the smaller stages. Although the overall structure remains fairly traditional, alternating between exploration, environmental interaction, ordinary threats, and bosses keeps the journey from depending on a single activity.

Players can select either a male or female protagonist. While this does not fundamentally transform the adventure, having a choice of character is a welcome inclusion. There are also multiple difficulty options. Two standard difficulty settings make the game accessible to different skill levels, while hidden difficulties provide additional challenges for players interested in pushing the mechanics further. This gives the game some replay potential beyond simply finding every treasure or completing every restoration objective.

The ancient-temple presentation works especially well with the central gameplay concept. Murals, ruined walls, treasure chambers, magical weapons, and forgotten gods all fit naturally into the setting. The visuals are comparatively modest, but the game does not need elaborate graphical technology to communicate its ideas. Its appeal comes from the combination of old-school action design and an environment that players are encouraged to manipulate and restore.

Its limitations mostly come from its focused scope. Players expecting an expansive Metroidvania, extensive character development, complicated RPG progression, or a highly cinematic narrative may find the experience simpler than anticipated. The wall restoration and treasure-hunting mechanics carry a significant portion of the game's individuality, so enjoyment depends partly on whether searching stages for environmental secrets remains satisfying. The relatively straightforward level structure can also make the experience feel old-fashioned compared with more elaborate modern action-platformers.

Steam Deck compatibility is officially unverified, meaning there is no confirmed Valve compatibility rating guaranteeing a completely trouble-free handheld experience. The game's modest system requirements and relatively straightforward side-scrolling design suggest that running it on Steam Deck may be technically feasible, but players should treat its handheld compatibility as unverified rather than officially supported. Controller behavior, interface readability, and other compatibility details may therefore require individual testing.

Overall, Ankh Guardian - Treasure of the Demon's Temple is a modest but interesting action adventure that gives familiar side-scrolling mechanics a recognizable twist. Its mixture of combat, exploration, hidden treasure, mural restoration, selectable protagonists, difficulty options, and periodic bosses creates a compact experience with more personality than its simple presentation initially suggests. It is particularly suited to players who enjoy smaller action games where discovering secrets and interacting with the environment are nearly as important as defeating enemies.

Decent but not super inspiring puzzle action game. Estimate about 4-5 hours for one playthrough on normal (I'm halfway through).

Self-contained levels, not a metroidvania as one might expect from looking at it. Some of the levels are a liiiittle too big for their own good, but I haven't got too stuck or lost or frustrated yet. It's okay! Deserves better than zero reviews!
