What players say about SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech is a visually striking and charming card-based RPG that blends tactical deckbuilding with traditional storytelling. While many players appreciate its accessible, cozy gameplay and beautiful aesthetic, others find the experience hampered by clunky UI, tedious deck management, and a repetitive pace in the late game.

What players like

  • Beautiful art and visuals 16 of 59 reviews

The hand-drawn, steampunk-inspired visuals are widely praised for being vibrant, creative, and a highlight of the game's presentation.

  • Fun card-based combat 14 of 59 reviews

Players enjoy the strategic depth of the deckbuilding mechanics, finding the party-based combos and turn-based combat to be engaging and satisfying.

  • Great for Steam Deck 9 of 59 reviews

Many reviewers highlight the game as a perfect fit for handheld play, noting that the pacing and save system work well for short sessions.

  • Atmospheric music 6 of 59 reviews

The soundtrack is frequently complimented for fitting the whimsical tone and enhancing the overall experience.

What players criticise

  • Clunky UI and design 11 of 59 reviews

Reviewers frequently cite frustrating design choices, such as the lack of tooltips, the inability to easily inspect enemies, and a tedious menu-driven system for basic actions.

  • Tedious deck management 8 of 59 reviews

The lack of a saved-deck feature forces players to manually reconfigure cards whenever changing party members, which many find time-consuming and unnecessary.

  • Repetitive late-game slog 7 of 59 reviews

Some players feel the gameplay loop drags toward the end, with bosses having excessive health that makes combat feel slow and boring.

Best for: Players who enjoy accessible, story-driven card battlers with charming visuals and are looking for a relaxing, non-roguelike RPG experience.

Not for you if: Players who require modern, streamlined UI features or those who become easily frustrated by repetitive combat and lack of deck management quality-of-life tools.

Card battlers are a newer step on the RPG scene. Essentially, you just get random commands instead of static ones, and it's often balanced against a resource. It feels good to combo with a single character, though, I wish we could select the bonus that occurs. It seems easier to get the ratio of building resource for 2 of the characters more than the third (that frog looking dude isn't as easy). I like that you can replay old missions, not so much to mine for xp, but to get resources to build new cards. It's key to turn the wizard into a more offensive build, and to make the fighter a bit more utility. The story itself is interesting; the premise of steampunk robots running around a pristine wilderness is too. Solid game to pick up here and there or just play through.

Not too bad, I'd give it 6.5, still rating this positively.

Steam World Dig 1st and 2nd one is much more fun, though.

quite fun, worth on discount, the story is the usual ironically childish one (maybe because it is for children but whatever)
