What players say about Lamplight City

Lamplight City is widely praised as an engaging narrative-driven detective experience, celebrated for its strong writing, voice acting, and atmospheric world-building. While many players enjoy the focus on dialogue and investigation over traditional item-based puzzles, some users find the game's strict failure states and lack of guidance frustrating.

What players like

  • Compelling story and writing 18 of 49 reviews

Reviewers frequently highlight the well-crafted narrative and character development, with many appreciating the gritty, Victorian-inspired setting and the nuanced dialogue.

  • Strong voice acting 11 of 49 reviews

The voice performances receive consistent praise for bringing the characters to life and adding warmth to the overall experience.

  • Choices matter 9 of 49 reviews

Players appreciate that decisions made during investigations can have genuine consequences, leading to different outcomes and encouraging multiple playthroughs.

  • Unique, inventory-free gameplay 8 of 49 reviews

The departure from traditional point-and-click inventory management in favor of conversational deduction is seen by many as a refreshing and logical change of pace.

What players criticise

  • Strict failure states 13 of 49 reviews

A significant number of players report frustration with 'dead ends' or soft-locking, where an early, seemingly innocent dialogue choice can make finishing a case impossible without restarting.

  • Lack of traditional puzzles 6 of 49 reviews

Players looking for classic inventory-based challenges may find the gameplay too light on puzzles, as progress relies almost entirely on navigating conversations.

Best for: Players who enjoy narrative-heavy detective stories and are comfortable with dialogue-driven investigation rather than complex item-combination puzzles.

Not for you if: Players who dislike the prospect of potentially having to restart cases or the entire game due to missed clues or irreversible dialogue choices.

Lamplight City — questions players ask

Is this a traditional point-and-click adventure game?
Not exactly. While it shares the aesthetic and perspective of the genre, it lacks a traditional inventory system and focuses primarily on dialogue-based investigation rather than item-combination puzzles.
How difficult are the puzzles?
The puzzles are generally considered accessible rather than difficult, focusing more on thorough observation and questioning characters. The main challenge comes from avoiding 'dead ends' caused by poor choices.
How long does it take to complete?
Reviews suggest a playthrough generally lasts around 8 to 12 hours, though it can vary based on your exploration and how many times you might need to restart cases.

Description

The Gateway to Vespuccia, the City of Air and Light, Lamplight City - the thriving port city of New Bretagne is a beacon of progress and industrial advancement in the New World. Yet beneath the promises of a shining 19th-century future, the city rests upon foundations of poverty, class struggle, and crime.

For police detective turned private investigator Miles Fordham, Lamplight City's shadowy corners are just part of the territory. But with his former partner constantly speaking to him from beyond the grave, his grip on sanity is slowly loosening. Can Miles find justice for his clients and track down his partner's killer before his entire world comes apart?

  • Be the detective you want to be. But prepare to face the consequences.
Investigate crime scenes, interrogate suspects, get information by any means necessary. Follow the law or make your own rules, but how you choose to act will affect people's attitudes towards you.
  • Five cases to solve, with multiple suspects, false leads, and different outcomes.
Never find yourself stuck in a dead-end situation. If the case becomes unsolvable, simply move on to the next one. The story will adapt based on your choices.
  • Single click interface with no inventory.
Gather clues and documents in your casebook for review. Item manipulation is handled via a context-sensitive cursor.
  • A fictional city with four boroughs to explore, each with their own unique flavor.
Players will visit each of these boroughs throughout the game, exploring themes such as class divide and the public's fear of emerging steam tech.
  • Inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens.
  • Meet over 50 professionally voiced characters.
  • Original score by Mark Benis

While the gameplay, IMO is really easy, the story of this game will grip you like a, well I can't say here, but it's a really great story. Voice acting is good throughout, and there's some mature stuff that would fit for Halloween time.

It's more like a interative visaul novel more than a detective/puzzle solving game, bsaically all u have to do is talkin to npcs to gain evidence; the cases were quite simple, story is a bit old-fashioned but the whole playthrough is very immersive, the BGM and voice acting adds so much.

Cute Really Glad I grabbed this and Rosewater. It doesn't have amazing graphics but the way the visuals are done once you get into the game it kind of grows on you. If you're the type to add more depth mentally if your brain is given simple but beautiful images this will be a great experience. If you just want a solid point and click game this is a great find.

A great game!

The overall playing experience is excellent - 5 Stars! The worldbuilding, characters and narrative are brilliant. A lot of work and thought went into this.

The mystery solving is very good - 4 stars. Definitely better than most in the genre. I love that you can accuse the wrong person or even declare a case unsolvable. There are some flaws, like choosing the wrong response to a character means they won't talk to you, cutting off a whole line of investigation.

I recommend playing it once *without* commentary, to avoid spoilers, and then a second time with commentary, to appreciate the game to the full.
