User Reviews
Not my cap of tea. There is a lot of poetry (which is not necessarily a bad thing) and a lot of philosophy (which is not necassarliy a good thing). But the gameplay feels overly simplistic, and the game feels laking at this regard. The graphic is nice and there are some interesting scenes, but overall nothing too fancy. If you would like a short, simple, almost visual-novel-like, sort of poetic, sort of philosophic game, you could enjoy it. But for my taste, the game is lacks depth in a lot of sides.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A retro FPS that uses combat as an entry point to something far stranger, more philosophical, and deeply personal.
🧠 A FPS That Isn't Afraid to Be Strange
This Strange Realm Of Mine is one of those games that makes it clear very quickly that it has no interest in following a conventional formula. At first glance, it looks like a relatively straightforward retro FPS, but the concept goes much further than simply moving through levels and shooting enemies. Psychological horror, poetry, philosophical dialogue, exploration, puzzles, and deliberately unusual situations are all mixed together to create an identity that is difficult to confuse with anything else.
After a few hours, what stands out most isn't necessarily the sophistication of any individual mechanic, but the way the game combines elements that normally wouldn't appear together. It is clearly an auteur-driven project: sometimes the ideas work surprisingly well, sometimes the limitations are obvious, but the game rarely feels generic.
🎮 GAMEPLAY
The core gameplay follows an old-school FPS structure, with weapons such as the pistol, SMG, and shotgun, alongside melee options. The shooting is straightforward and functional, but it isn't where the game's greatest strength lies. Combat feels more like a tool for moving the player through different environments and situations than a deeply developed system built around advanced movement, precision mechanics, or complex character builds.
Exploration is equally important. The environments are relatively compact and often function as small spaces to navigate, fight enemies, search for resources, and figure out what is actually happening. This approach fits the game's surreal nature particularly well because each new environment can dramatically change the tone. Rather than building the entire campaign around one formula, This Strange Realm Of Mine constantly tries to surprise the player with changes in context and pacing.
That variety is probably the game's biggest success. It can move from combat to dialogue, poetry, or philosophical reflection without forcing everything into the traditional structure of a shooter. If you're looking for an extremely polished FPS focused almost entirely on gunplay, the mechanics may feel basic; if you enjoy indie games willing to experiment, that simplicity is part of the appeal.
🔁 GAMEPLAY LOOP & REPLAYABILITY
The game isn't built around grinding, loot, or endless progression. Its structure is closer to a compact adventure where exploration, combat, characters, and narrative take turns carrying the experience forward.
The characters and dialogue also create curiosity about what lies beneath the surface. Paying attention to what people say and trying to interpret the meaning behind certain events is much more important here than simply rushing from one combat encounter to the next.
On the other hand, players expecting dozens of hours of content, deep progression systems, or extensive unlockables probably won't find much reason to keep playing after experiencing the main concept. Its replay value comes primarily from interpreting the narrative and discovering details rather than from a traditional endgame loop.
🎨 GRAPHICS & ART DIRECTION
Technically, This Strange Realm Of Mine isn't trying to compete with modern productions. Its visual strength comes from combining 3D elements with pixel-art aesthetics. That choice feels less like a purely technical limitation and more like a deliberate part of the game's identity.
The environments have an intentionally strange appearance, and the lack of conventional realism actually helps the psychological atmosphere. The contrast between peaceful moments and disturbing imagery works particularly well because the game doesn't need photorealistic graphics to create discomfort.
This is a good example of the difference between technical quality and artistic quality. It isn't visually sophisticated by modern standards, but it has enough personality to compensate for that. You can clearly see its graphical limitations without being able to call the game visually anonymous.
🔊 AUDIO & IMMERSION
The original soundtrack plays an important role in establishing the atmosphere, especially because the game constantly shifts between horror, contemplation, action, and more eccentric moments. Those tonal changes would be much harder to sustain without a coherent audio identity.
The sound design isn't trying to turn every encounter into a cinematic spectacle. Instead, it supports the atmosphere and the feeling of exploring a world somewhere between reality, nightmare, and psychological reflection.
That contrast between violence, silence, dialogue, and contemplative moments fits the overall concept surprisingly well. The result isn't necessarily traditional horror, but rather an atmosphere that remains uncomfortable and unpredictable.
📈 DIFFICULTY & BALANCE
Difficulty isn't the main attraction here. The game is more interested in presenting situations, environments, and ideas than turning every encounter into an extreme test of mechanical skill.
That works because combat doesn't have to carry the entire experience. However, players accustomed to modern FPS games or highly refined boomer shooters may notice that some mechanics are considerably simpler. The challenge is more about exploration and understanding the world than mastering an extremely technical combat system.
In that sense, This Strange Realm Of Mine works better when approached as an experimental adventure with FPS elements rather than as a direct competitor to the genre's mechanical heavyweights.
⚙️ PERFORMANCE & OPTIMIZATION
I won't invent FPS numbers, frametime data, or CPU/GPU usage that weren't actually measured during my three hours of playtime. What can be objectively observed is that the game has very modest hardware requirements by modern standards, with extremely old minimum specifications and only 2 GB of required storage.
Because of that, the technical rating should be interpreted conservatively. Low system requirements do not automatically prove perfect optimization, but there is also no basis here for inventing specific technical problems that weren't actually observed.
🆚 COMPARISON WITH OTHER GAMES
Players who enjoy retro FPS games will recognize elements reminiscent of DOOM and other classic shooters, particularly in the basic combat and exploration structure. The major difference is that This Strange Realm Of Mine isn't trying to reproduce the boomer-shooter formula alone.
Its approach is much more experimental. While a traditional FPS usually uses narrative and atmosphere to reinforce the combat, this game often works in the opposite direction: combat becomes one of the tools used to present a psychological, strange, and deliberately unpredictable world.
That mixture also explains why the game can divide opinions. Players looking exclusively for gunplay may find it simplistic; players who enjoy indie games that use videogames as a form of artistic expression will find considerably more to appreciate.
💎 WHAT MAKES THIS GAME STAND OUT?
An Artistic Identity That Is Impossible to Confuse
The biggest differentiator is the combination of retro FPS gameplay + psychological horror + poetry + philosophy + experimental visuals. This isn't simply an FPS with a strange story attached to it; the strangeness is part of the game's actual structure.
Another strength is its willingness to abandon expectations. The game regularly introduces situations that don't fit the traditional shooter template, shifting between violence, conversations, eccentric characters, and quieter contemplative moments.
And there's one more quality that matte
This game deserves more attention and the art style was so good and I really loved the chapter with the flying ship it was perfect
Don't get fooled by the action and music in the trailer.
It HAS shooter elements, but at it's core it is a psychological travel through the mind. Surprisingly lots of (neglect-able) dialogue. which may or may not make sense.
