Despite his retirement, Shugo is on a mission to investigate the disappearance of a well-to-do family's daughter as a favor to his former boss, Arishima Kazuma, who is currently heading the Ueno Serial Murder Case.
Upon arriving at the Kozuki residence, the site of the disappearance, Shugo is surprised to encounter Kozuki Kazuna, as she has the same face as his former lover and her twin sister, Kozuki Yura. Kazuna begs Shugo to find her sister, but their father, Kozuki Keiichiro, declares bluntly, "My daughter is already dead."

I kind of wish I researched a some before, because it turns out Cartagra is not a prequel but actually got released before Kara No Shoujo (The Shell).
That being said it not a requirement to read this first, but reading KnS first gives away a little bit of how the canon end of cartagra. Your choice.
Overall this was very good, much in line to what I experience with The Shell (Imo the latter is better).
It doesnt have the investigation and detective elements of The Shell, but its still a very choice heavy game, making it feel much longer than it actually is (took me 20 hours to get all endings, same as The Shell)
Being the HD version, the art looks gorgeous and apparently has new endings not seen in the original version.
About the censoring, its not as bad as I was expecting; its not a truncated version that need a patch.
There still is risque nudity and gore, and the H scenes get cut off at the absolute very last moment.
I really recommend this VN, had a lot of fun just like with The Shell.
This was my first Innocent Grey visual novel and I loved it.
I found it by accident. I was looking into The Shell (the HD remaster of the Kara no Shoujo trilogy), then learned Cartagra is the prequel, so I figured I’d start here first.
I didn’t expect to like it this much, but I couldn’t put it down until I’d cleared every route. The characters are a big reason why. They’re really well written and have a lot of depth. The art is gorgeous too, and the ending themes stuck with me.
Yura ended up being my favorite. I liked her way more than I expected. She’s calm and soft-spoken, which makes a fascinating contrast with the things she’s actually done. Kazuna, on the other hand, was just too loud for me and hard to sit through. But even with her getting on my nerves, Yura’s quiet side made the whole thing worth it for me.
I so can’t wait to read The Shell now!
Great stuff!
The censorship really sucks though.
9/10
Big fan of KnS so I was excited when I heard this was finally coming to Steam after all these years. I definitely recommend Cartagra to murder mystery fans and anyone that has played and enjoyed KnS.
Still waiting for gore restoration patch at time of review.
Disappointed as it's published on Steam. Be sure of that, it doesn't include a patch for 18+ and original gore content. Yes indeed, all of the sexual content is censored and some of the gore scenes are adjusted to be more mild.
It makes me wonder if it's necessary to sacrifice adult readers' pursuit of morbid content for the sake of a more artistic rendering of atmosphere and of all age to be appropriate to play, especially in such a detective-like visual novel which was made by Innocent Grey.
BTW, another complaint is that the remastered version with HD makes the Showa aesthetic gone. Well, that's pretty subjective. This is why I don't play The shell part: 1 on Steam
In my point of view, sexual content and gore content are absolutely necessary. However, to someone, these are flaws that strike in CARTAGRA. To meet the needs of both parties, an optional patch is definitely extremely helpful.
( I think these adult contents have partly perfected the presentation and connotation of the entire story. The artistic part and 18+ part are not in confliction. But, let's see.)
So, what the heck, you sell it on Steam with a fkin high price and even without a little patch for 18+? Don't try to tell me you are not able to remaster the 18+ content under the Steam's regulations. (Cuz Shell series has 18+ patches which are published by Shiravune.) Puts the name of Innocent Grey to shame.
Never will I buy any Innocent Grey's series by MangaGamer in the future.
