Description

River Runners is a cooperative multiplayer adventure where you and up to 3 friends must work together to survive a dangerous, ever-changing river.  Players can each take their own raft, split into groups or work together in a single raft.

The river grows more dangerous as daylight fades. Time is a limited resource, and as the sun sets, visibility drops, making it harder to spot threats ahead. Along the journey, collect resources to purchase useful items and upgrades that improve your chances of survival. But beware—colliding with obstacles can damage the raft, tearing holes that must be patched quickly before it loses air. Strong teamwork, quick decisions, and clear communication are the key to making it to the end.

Work Together

Maneuvering the raft is not a one person job, everyone in the raft needs to coordinate to avoid obstacles and collect loot.  Clear communication and quick decisions are essential.

Avoid Crashing

Bumping into terrain and other obstacles floating in the river can puncture holes in the raft.

Patch Holes

Holes in the raft drain its air, too many holes for too long will sink your crew.

Collect Money

Collect chests floating in the river to turn in for money once you reach base camp.

Purchase Items

Purchase different items with the money you've collected at the start of each day to aid your team in their next day on the river, each one is harder than the last.

Have Fun

Explore the different twists, turns, and challenges that each leg of the river throws at you and your crew.

River Runners builds its identity around a straightforward but entertaining cooperative premise: survive a dangerous river while trying to keep both your raft and your friendships intact. Developed and published by Informal Tech Games, it is a physics-driven rafting adventure designed for up to four players, with much of its entertainment coming from communication, unexpected accidents, and the struggle to coordinate several people when everything starts going wrong. Rather than burying the concept beneath complicated systems, the game keeps its focus on navigating hazardous waterways and dealing with the consequences of poor decisions.

Controlling the raft is where the cooperative design becomes most apparent. Players can travel together on a single raft or divide themselves between separate vessels, giving groups some freedom in how they approach a run. Sharing one raft can make coordination easier in theory, but it also means that a single bad maneuver can place the entire team in danger. Successfully navigating obstacles requires players to pay attention to the river, communicate upcoming threats, and work together instead of expecting one person to handle everything. This makes even ordinary stretches of water engaging because there is always the possibility that an innocent mistake will develop into complete chaos.

Crashes are particularly important because damage is more than a temporary inconvenience. Striking obstacles can puncture the raft, forcing players to repair holes before too much air escapes. This creates an enjoyable cycle where one mistake can produce several additional problems. The crew may need to repair damage while simultaneously steering away from another obstacle, recovering resources, or trying to prevent another collision. These situations give the game its strongest moments because success depends on improvisation rather than simply following a predetermined routine.

The changing time of day adds another layer of pressure. Visibility becomes increasingly limited as darkness approaches, making navigation more difficult and encouraging players to make progress while conditions remain manageable. This gives each trip a useful sense of escalation. A run that begins as a relatively relaxed journey can gradually become much more stressful as players encounter greater danger while having less time to react. It is a simple mechanic, but it works well with the game's emphasis on teamwork and unpredictable accidents.

Exploration also has a practical purpose through chests scattered along the river. Recovering these rewards provides money that can be spent at base camp on items for subsequent journeys. This creates a risk-versus-reward element because chasing valuable resources may require the crew to move into dangerous positions or sacrifice an easier route. Since later days become progressively harder, earning money and preparing properly can become increasingly valuable. The progression system is not excessively complicated, but it gives players reasons to think beyond merely reaching the end of the current stretch.

Randomized obstacles help prevent the experience from becoming entirely dependent on memorization. Players still become more capable as they learn how the raft behaves and how different hazards should be approached, but changing obstacle placement requires some degree of adaptation between attempts. Two maps provide different difficulty levels, while individual river legs establish a broader sense of progression. The environmental selection is not especially large, however, so players expecting a huge collection of rivers may find the overall scope somewhat limited. Much of the replay value instead comes from randomized situations and the unpredictability of playing with other people.

Proximity voice chat is an excellent match for the concept. Communication naturally matters when several people are attempting to steer, repair damage, collect resources, and react to hazards at the same time. Hearing teammates become more distant when separated also contributes to the atmosphere and can turn unfortunate situations into memorable comedy. While single-player functionality is available, the mechanics clearly have greater potential with friends because human mistakes and spontaneous teamwork are central to the experience.

The colorful 3D visual style suits the lighthearted nature of the game. It does not attempt to present itself as a serious rafting simulation, instead favoring readable environments and a playful presentation that complements the physics-based action. The first-person viewpoint makes collisions and sudden changes in the river feel immediate, particularly when the crew loses control. Character cosmetics provide some additional personalization without distracting from the main survival and navigation mechanics.

Steam Deck compatibility is officially listed as Unsupported. Players primarily interested in experiencing it on Valve's handheld should keep this limitation in mind rather than assuming that the simple controls automatically guarantee full compatibility. Its design may appear ideal for portable play, but the official Deck classification does not currently provide that assurance.

River Runners succeeds most when its relatively simple mechanics collide with one another. Steering leads to mistakes, mistakes create damage, damage forces emergency repairs, optional loot encourages risky decisions, and darkness makes every remaining problem harder to manage. Its limited number of maps could restrict long-term variety, but randomized hazards and cooperative interactions provide additional replayability that static content alone cannot offer. For groups that enjoy physics-driven cooperative games where communication and accidental disasters are equally important, it offers a focused and amusing rafting experience.
