I have only played act 1 of one character as of this review. So I only have a taste of what will one day be, but that taste was very good. Almost every change moving from the first game to the sequel is an improvement in my mind.

Netoria Tactics 2, developed by Apollo Seven Games and published by TinyHat Studios, is a turn-based tactical RPG that blends classic strategy mechanics with a strong emphasis on character relationships and mature storytelling. Designed as an evolution of traditional grid-based strategy games, it builds upon familiar foundations—unit positioning, class abilities, and calculated movement—while weaving interpersonal drama and branching narrative consequences into its core systems. The result is a strategy title that places as much weight on emotional bonds and dialogue choices as it does on battlefield efficiency.

Combat unfolds on tile-based maps where each character operates according to class strengths, movement range, and unique abilities. Tactical positioning is critical; flanking, terrain advantage, and turn order management can mean the difference between victory and defeat. Encounters require careful resource planning, as characters cannot simply brute-force their way through every battle. The system encourages thoughtful play rather than reckless aggression. While the mechanics may feel familiar to fans of the genre, they are reinforced by relationship dynamics that subtly affect performance and story progression.

A defining feature of Netoria Tactics 2 is its relationship system. Characters develop bonds based on shared experiences, battlefield performance, and player-driven dialogue decisions. Supporting allies effectively in combat can strengthen connections, while allowing companions to fall or making insensitive narrative choices may strain relationships. These dynamics are not superficial; they influence story direction, unlock unique scenes, and alter how characters respond in future encounters. By tying emotional growth to tactical performance, the game creates a layered feedback loop between combat and narrative.

The story is divided into Acts, with the current Early Access content focusing on an introductory arc that establishes the world and main cast. The narrative explores themes of political intrigue, loyalty, romance, identity, and personal ambition. Each playable character brings their own perspective, motivations, and internal conflicts to the overarching storyline. Dialogue sequences are presented in a visual novel format, allowing players to make choices that shape both interpersonal relationships and broader plot outcomes. The tone leans heavily into mature themes, presenting romance and sensual content alongside tactical warfare and political drama.

Visually, Netoria Tactics 2 embraces a retro-inspired pixel art aesthetic. Character sprites are detailed enough to convey personality, while portrait artwork during dialogue sequences adds emotional expression and nuance. The battlefield maps are designed for clarity, ensuring that strategic information remains readable even during complex engagements. Although not graphically cutting-edge, the art style complements the game’s thematic focus and pays homage to classic strategy RPGs.

The soundtrack and sound design provide understated support, reinforcing emotional beats during story moments and heightening tension during battles. Music shifts subtly between reflective and dramatic tones, enhancing immersion without overpowering the experience. While the audio presentation is not elaborate, it effectively anchors both the tactical and narrative components.

As an Early Access release, Netoria Tactics 2 is still evolving. Future Acts promise expanded storylines, additional characters, and further refinement of systems. Some elements, such as interface customization and balance adjustments, may feel in progress, reflecting the ongoing development cycle. Nevertheless, the foundation is solid, with core combat mechanics and narrative integration functioning cohesively.

The game’s mature themes make it a niche offering within the tactical RPG genre. Players seeking purely strategic gameplay without romantic or character-driven elements may find the narrative emphasis overwhelming. However, those interested in emotional storytelling intertwined with turn-based strategy will likely appreciate its distinctive approach. The relationship mechanics add depth beyond conventional stat progression, creating meaningful stakes both on and off the battlefield.

Ultimately, Netoria Tactics 2 stands out for its willingness to merge intimate character development with structured tactical combat. It does not rely solely on nostalgia or genre convention but attempts to push character-driven storytelling to the forefront of strategic gameplay. For players who value narrative consequence alongside calculated battlefield decisions, it offers a layered and evolving experience with the potential to grow into a substantial and memorable indie tactical RPG as development continues.

A nice Fire Emblem-style game with great replayability value since you can play from the perspective of four characters AND each one has branching options, giving you plenty of possibilities. The graphic part needs improvement but overall is a very promising game. Looking forward to more content.
