great game. don't listen to the haters.
IRE: A PROLOGUE
This is an horror game with the Bermuda Triangle setting, which we don't have many to choose from! I was intrigued for this game and its looping mechanic that do fit the strangeness of the BT. The story is told by each passing day as you complete your daily objectives... all that by avoiding the "Scribble Monster/Entity" that pursues you in the ship.
The game do have decent visuals and the sounds are good for immersion... HOWEVER, that is where I got annoyed by the monster too much and well, the negatives kills the said immersion. It's rare that I don't recommend a game but this one is just too irritating and I ain't the only one experiencing the disappointment. AND, I did waited close to 6 months after my first attempt at this game and there doesn't seem to be any improvement for Scribbles.
Scribbles is frustrating. Sure stealth is a huge gameplay mechanic in IRE but the monster hears you like all the opposite way of the ship... even when you go around crouched. If it spots you well you're out of luck and monster goes at light speed towards you! You cannot run for sh!t (you're supposed to be a kid and somehow you walk/run like a granny) and the hidden places aren't in every rooms. What is even WORSE, the monster even waits near you to come out then gets you. BLAH!!! I was sure that I had gotten some tools before a day run but the next day, I couldn't find a screwdriver (it's to open vents). If that is part of the normal loop mechanism, I am not a fan at all and wish you could just hold on to your found tools and that they would always be properly placed.
So again... you cannot run, hiding places aren't everywhere and even if you do hide, the monster roam around it. There are tools to lure the monster away but it when it works, it's only for a few seconds.
OVERALL & RECOMMENDATION:
Overall, good visuals, good audio (ambiant sounds especially) and especially a neat & interesting setting that we don't have often.
Sadly, the "rogue-like" loop mechanic of this game is where I got bored and couldn't stick to it and reach the end by repeating the tasks and avoiding Scribbles all the time... being such a slog. The monster is not scary but very annoying and kills the fun out of the game. If that is a "prologue", I am weary for the full game... if there is still one planned that is...
There is a demo so maybe give this a try if you are still interested in this game...
The game follows a good storyline, has a great voice actress, and does a good job of keeping things both tense, but possible. The creature in the game is both scary and fascinating. Well written. Good dialogue. Good gameplay and mechanics. A few of the areas were really challenging. But you get used to how the creature hunts and patrols. Oh and you can't run/sprint. This is clearly on purpose so that the creature can be faster than you when it sees you. You have to learn where the hiding places are and strategically be near enough to them to get by the creature. I'd recommend this game if you don't mind hiding a lot. I feel like ProbablyMonsters has great potential for their next title.
After a while the monster gets you more often and you restart from the beginning every single time, I got no time for this kinda crap jeez no save points really.....
Maybe warn players this game feels like a rouge like
Broken game that I bought during the summer sale that is abandoned by devs with the last update in January supposedly addressing the issues where the monster would get stuck on things or camp your hiding spot when it still does (see towards the end of my video below in engine room and towards last minutes of gameplay before final thoughts). Beyond those bugs though you will be you hiding in lockers for long periods of time and you can't run either. I don't know who came up with that idea but its the top 10 dumbest things I've seen in games made by indie devs / small companies especially when this monster goes at mach 10 speed when it sees you. It doesn't help either that this thing has supersonic hearing either
The game beyond that has good voice acting, atmosphere, level design and graphics but clearly even with the fancy dev logs the devs went straight into developing another game forgetting this one
