User Reviews
Cubed and Dangerous, developed and published by Ace High Arcade, is a fast-moving twin-stick roguelike shooter that leans heavily into chaos, customization, and replay-driven progression. It builds on familiar foundations—procedurally structured runs, escalating enemy waves, and loot-based growth—but distinguishes itself through its strong emphasis on build variety and player experimentation. Rather than relying purely on reflex-driven combat, it invites players to shape each run through a constantly evolving arsenal of weapons, modifiers, and character abilities.
The core gameplay loop is immediate and action-focused. Each run drops you into compact arenas where survival depends on movement, positioning, and efficient damage output. Enemies swarm in increasing numbers, filling the screen with projectiles and hazards that demand quick reactions. The twin-stick controls are responsive and intuitive, making it easy to get into the flow of dodging and firing. While the action can become hectic, the game maintains a level of visual clarity that allows skilled players to navigate even the most crowded situations. This balance between chaos and control is key to its appeal, as it keeps the experience intense without becoming overwhelming.
What gives Cubed and Dangerous its identity is the depth of its build system. Throughout each run, players collect a wide range of weapons, relics, and upgrades, many of which feature randomized properties or modifiers. These elements can drastically alter how the game plays, encouraging experimentation with different combinations. Some builds emphasize raw damage, others focus on survivability or crowd control, and the interplay between items often leads to unexpected synergies. This system creates a strong sense of discovery, as players gradually learn how different components interact and how to optimize their approach.
Character variety further enhances this system. Multiple playable classes offer distinct starting abilities and playstyles, giving each run a different foundation. Choosing a character isn’t just a cosmetic decision—it shapes how you approach combat and which upgrades are most effective. This encourages replayability, as players are motivated to try different combinations of characters and builds to see how the experience changes.
Progression extends beyond individual runs through a meta-layer that unlocks new characters, upgrades, and options over time. Even failed attempts contribute to this long-term growth, ensuring that each session feels productive. The game also incorporates a branching path system, allowing players to choose between different encounters or routes. Riskier paths often offer better rewards, adding a strategic element to progression and giving players some control over how challenging their run becomes.
The pacing of the game is well structured, alternating between intense combat segments and brief moments of preparation. Occasional stops at shops or upgrade points provide opportunities to refine your build, creating a rhythm that balances action with decision-making. This structure helps prevent fatigue, even as the difficulty ramps up and encounters become more demanding.
Visually, the game adopts a clean, stylized look that prioritizes readability. The environments are simple, serving primarily as backdrops for the action, while enemies and projectiles are clearly defined to support the fast-paced gameplay. Effects are vibrant and impactful, reinforcing the sense of power as your build grows stronger. While the aesthetic may not stand out in terms of artistic detail, it effectively supports the mechanics and ensures that the gameplay remains the focus.
Despite its strengths, the game is not without its limitations. The core loop, while engaging, does not change significantly over time. Even with the variety offered by different builds and characters, the moment-to-moment action remains largely consistent. This can lead to a sense of repetition during longer sessions, particularly for players who prefer more evolving gameplay structures. Additionally, the reliance on randomized systems can result in occasional balance issues, with some runs feeling significantly easier or harder depending on the items acquired.
Difficulty scaling can also be uneven, especially in later stages where enemy density and damage output increase rapidly. While this adds tension, it can sometimes feel abrupt, particularly if a player’s build has not developed effectively. However, this unpredictability is also part of the game’s design, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and experimentation.
Ultimately, Cubed and Dangerous succeeds as a highly replayable and satisfying roguelike shooter that emphasizes player choice and build creativity. It delivers fast-paced combat, a robust customization system, and a progression loop that encourages repeated play. While it may not offer the variety or narrative depth of more expansive titles, it excels within its scope, providing a consistently engaging experience for fans of action-oriented roguelikes.
Rating: 8/10
Action roguelike + roguelite that plays surprisingly well.
+Plays well
+Plenty of player choice in terms of GEAR and PERK choices -> "builds"
+Ammo & energy mechanics bring neat build variety
+Plenty of content it seems
-Too easy? -> after infinite L40, traps/hazards will get you though
-The "rock" main gameplay music is infernally bad, to facepalm-level
-The aesthetics aren't pleasing to me
-You will not be able to see anything in the end game with certain weapons as the screen is filled with your weapon effects -> you will not see any of the hazards/traps and die to 1-2 hit of those
= Recommended. Worth your time surely and anything under 5€!

It's a fun twin stick shooter! Lots of options but not overwhelming either. The art style really drew me in.
Basic and boring. Becomes overly repetitive in map, objective, and gameplay design within the first hour.
Awesome little game!! Not the best looking BUT it got very solid gameplay with a real feeling of challenge and enjoyment. Not a fan of the UI as it looks basic and kinda ugly. The compare feature doesn't really work for me as I would like it to compare, side by side, the new weapon VS the weapon I'm actually holding in a nice, easy to see UI. Not finding much useful stuff in shops, they tend to just show me rubbish and I'm not up for re rolling as I'm not a gambler. Doing so did not really improve the results. Map isn't the easiest thing to read during the action. Could be clearer/bigger/better.
The action is great. The feeling that you're not welcome is awesome. The overwhelming waves are great and offer some real tactical, skillful ideas to be born. Just wish it felt a little bit nicer all over. Some more effort into the graphical presentation would be awesome. Better guns and explosions. More scenary. But these things are what I'd expect a sequel to bring to the table...
It's great as is...a tight, solid shooter that does exactly what it says on the tin...
Nice 7/10
