What players say about Emberward

Emberward is highly regarded as a standout tower defense game, frequently praised for its innovative core mechanic of using Tetris-like blocks to construct enemy paths. While some players note that it is currently in early access and could benefit from further balancing, the vast majority consider it a polished and addictive experience that blends roguelite elements effectively.

What players like

  • Innovative maze-building mechanics 38 of 120 reviews

Reviewers consistently highlight the unique, intuitive system where players use randomly generated, Tetris-shaped blocks to create custom labyrinths and chokepoints for enemies.

  • High replayability 29 of 120 reviews

Players appreciate the roguelite structure, noting that the variety of characters, tower combinations, relics, and randomized map elements ensure that no two runs feel identical.

  • Active development 18 of 120 reviews

The community frequently praises the developer for maintaining an active update schedule, regularly adding new content and responding positively to community feedback.

  • Polished performance 15 of 120 reviews

Despite being in early access, many users report a smooth, bug-free experience that runs well, including on the Steam Deck with community controller profiles.

What players criticise

  • Balancing issues 19 of 120 reviews

Some players feel that certain towers and characters are significantly more powerful than others, rendering some strategic options ineffective or redundant.

  • Limited meta-progression depth 9 of 120 reviews

A segment of users finds the meta-progression system feels somewhat tacked on, arguing it doesn't add enough depth to long-term gameplay compared to other roguelites.

  • Run length and pacing 6 of 120 reviews

A number of reviewers express that individual campaign runs can feel overly long or, conversely, that there is a lack of meaningful content after beating the hardest difficulty settings.

Best for: Players who enjoy mixing strategic tower defense with spatial puzzle-solving and value a high level of replayability through roguelite mechanics.

Not for you if: Players looking for a deeply competitive or perfectly balanced meta-game who may be frustrated by the currently experimental nature of early access balance tweaks.

Another game to add to the list of the new golden age of Tower Defence games. This one is up there with the likes of recent TD juggernauts like No Creeps Were Harmed TD and Axon TD which is about the highest praise a TD game can get.

I have been playing TD since the very beginning with SC1 and WC3TFT custom maps so I think I have a reasonably valid opinion on these games. I've played a heck of a lot of stand alone TD games over the years other than Sol Survivor there really wasn't anything that touched those older TD custom maps until fairly recently when No Creeps Were Harmed TD came out, then Axon TD, and now this. There are others that are absolutely worth your time and money but of the new golden wave of TD games I would have to say that these are the top three without a doubt. So, if you're into TD games and you've played those other two and liked them then this game is a must buy at full price without a shadow of a doubt.

It is a great addition to the mazing TD games where you basically get Tetris pieces to make your maze and each run is different as you can choose different main characters which had their own modifiers that change how you play the game and the fire in the middle is also changed through unlocks as well which again change how runs are played. There are then roguelike elements where you get points during each run and can unlock universal modifiers that stick with you forever. Each run you play after you pick your character and fire you then get to pick blocks, towers, and modifiers through RNG which makes every run truly unique. There is a lot more to the game but I think I have said enough as if any of this sounds enticing you should stop reading and start playing.

Another TD to add to the GOAT list which is the highest praise a game can get.

          GOAT TD games:

          1. No Creeps Were Harmed TD
          2. Sol Survivor
          3. Emberward
          4. Axon TD

Again, there are some gems out there which aren't mentioned but the above are the crème de la crème IMHO.

despite terrible mobile game type graphics, it's a great TD with emerging rules and tactics, 6 slot machines out of 10

Really great take on the tower defense genre with just enough roguelite elements to give you a sense of progression.

I've never been a huge fan of tower defense games but I'm so glad I gave this one a shot! There are many ways to approach each character, tower type, and even the individual levels. Each run feels different and gives plenty of options to decide which strategy and synergies to pursue.

The developer communicates well, accepts suggestions and feedback from the community, and continues to improve upon what is already a very solid game.
