What players say about Rune Factory 4 Special
Rune Factory 4 Special is widely considered a pinnacle of the farming-RPG genre, praised for its dense content, character depth, and addictive progression systems. While many players find the gameplay loop exceptionally rewarding, the experience is hindered by persistent technical issues, a heavy emphasis on mandatory grinding, and dated limitations in the romance system.
What players like
-
Extensive gameplay variety 65 of 93 reviews
Players appreciate the deep blend of farming, dungeon crawling, crafting, and monster taming, noting that these interconnected systems provide a level of complexity often missing from pure farming simulators.
-
Engaging character cast 48 of 93 reviews
The dialogue is consistently highlighted as varied, witty, and plentiful, which makes the town feel alive and creates a genuine incentive for daily player interaction.
-
Addictive progression loop 32 of 93 reviews
Reviewers frequently describe the game as hard to put down, citing the constant stat growth and wide variety of daily tasks as factors that foster a satisfying 'just one more day' experience.
What players criticise
-
Technical and port issues 25 of 93 reviews
Users report frequent crashes, black screens on startup, and clunky controller mapping; some also criticize the AI-upscaled textures for appearing blurry or smeary.
-
Mandatory grinding 18 of 93 reviews
Progression often requires heavy reliance on crafting and smithing to succeed in combat, which some find disrupts the game's pace or acts as an artificial barrier to finishing the story.
-
Restrictive romance options 12 of 93 reviews
Players express frustration regarding the lack of same-sex marriage options and the perception that several romanceable characters have 'child-coded' designs.
Best for: Players who enjoy deep, systems-heavy JRPGs with farming elements and are looking for a game with a high time commitment.
Not for you if: Players who prefer casual, stress-free farming games or those who find dated visuals and potential performance bugs unacceptable.

User Reviews
everything about this game is sensational, love it (dolce is very cute)
This is one of the cases I'd rather leave a "mixed" review instead of outright positive or negative.
I've played hundreds of hours of the original RF4 in the 3DS, this is my first time playing the Special version.
While the game IS great and lots of fun, I really didn't like the way they handled the 2D graphics here. They used some lame ass AI upscaling and the end result is very much ass, akin to what Square Enix initially did to their Chrono Trigger PC port. I used a mod to disable the upscaling so the 2D stuff looked a bit more like the 3DS version so it looked better than the shitty upscaling but still bad because it wasn't made to be played on a 1080p (or higher) screen.
The devs should really get their shit together and work on properly fixing the game's 2D assets but I'm not holding my breath for it.
The low town event chance is kind of annoying, but aside from that everything is great
An incredible game so far... Wonderful characters and music, the best gameplay system in the Rune Factory series, and writing far superior to that of the more recent entries...
peak gameplay
