What players say about DOOM 64

DOOM 64 is widely regarded as a unique, atmospheric, and horror-focused entry in the classic series that serves as a distinct alternative to the original Doom and Doom II. Players generally appreciate the Nightdive port for its quality-of-life features, though the shift toward puzzle-solving and slower pacing remains a point of contention for some.

What players like

  • Atmosphere and horror tone 34 of 120 reviews

Reviewers frequently praise the game for its dark, eerie lighting and ambient sound design, which create an immersive and unsettling experience distinct from the original titles.

  • Quality of the Nightdive port 25 of 120 reviews

Many players highlight the excellent technical work, noting smooth 60fps performance, widescreen support, and controller compatibility that make the game feel modern.

  • Intricate level design 18 of 120 reviews

Players often enjoy the maze-like, complex levels that focus on secrets, keys, and the unique Unmaker weapon, seeing them as a fresh evolution of the classic formula.

What players criticise

  • Confusing navigation and backtracking 28 of 120 reviews

A common criticism is that levels are overly reliant on finding switches and backtracking, which some players find tedious and poorly signposted compared to original Doom titles.

  • Missing enemy variety 16 of 120 reviews

Reviewers frequently note the absence of iconic enemies like the Revenant and Arch-Vile, and express frustration with the heavy reliance on Hell Knights and Barons.

  • Polarizing music style 14 of 120 reviews

The ambient, atmospheric soundtrack is a point of division, with many fans of the original games expressing that they miss the high-energy heavy metal music.

Best for: Players who enjoy a darker, atmospheric, and puzzle-oriented take on the classic DOOM formula.

Not for you if: Players who prioritize fast-paced, non-stop arcade action and dislike maze-like navigation or frequent backtracking.

More condensed, puzzle-heavy levels which still throw a lot of enemies at you.

Little more backtracking than I would like in places, but a recommended play for any Doom fan.
