What players say about DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two

DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part Two receives a mixed reception, largely due to a controversial final boss encounter that many players find tedious and frustrating. While the new Sentinel Hammer mechanic is widely praised for enriching the combat, the overall experience is often described as uneven compared to the base game.

What players like

  • Satisfying new combat mechanic 5 of 29 reviews

The addition of the Sentinel Hammer is a highlight for many, with players finding it far superior to the Crucible, as it integrates well into the combat loop and creates satisfying resource generation.

  • Fun escalation encounters 3 of 29 reviews

Several reviewers specifically pointed to the escalation encounters as a source of high-quality gameplay and enjoyment, often citing them as the most fun part of the expansion.

  • Solid environmental design 3 of 29 reviews

Players generally appreciate the visual variety and design of the new maps, with some noting they provide a refreshing change of pace.

What players criticise

  • Tedious final boss fight 15 of 29 reviews

The final boss encounter against the Dark Lord is the primary point of criticism; reviewers frequently describe it as a 'reskinned Marauder' that is repetitive, slow, and artificially difficult due to health regeneration and long wait times.

  • Frustrating new enemies 5 of 29 reviews

Certain enemy types, particularly the Cursed Prowlers and Screecher Zombies, are criticized for restricting movement and breaking the fluid combat flow that the series is known for.

  • Inconsistent difficulty and pacing 4 of 29 reviews

Reviewers note that the challenge often feels forced or artificially inflated rather than rewarding, and some find the narrative conclusion to be lackluster.

Best for: Players who prioritize combat mechanics like the Sentinel Hammer and want to complete the Slayer’s narrative journey, regardless of boss fight quality.

Not for you if: Players who found Marauder-style combat encounters tedious in the base game or those who become frustrated by boss fights that rely on specific, repetitive attack windows.

After this DLC came out I didn't understand why so many bad reviews, I thought it couldn't be THAT bad.. until I got to play it. The levels look very good, stunning work there. The music is ok but it could've been better IMO, it's tough to top Mick Gordon. Some traversals feel over the top, and certain things just don't make sense.

However, this DLC is difficult enough to begin with, it'll make you lower the difficulty because of how hard it can get. Some fights are incredibly exhausting, and certain demons are just a dick move, like the armored baron, you gotta dump your entire arsenal against that giant a-hole and you better do it quick or guess what? He regenerates his armor and you gotta start all over again! And needless to say, the Master Level is immensely hard, unless you're a Zero Master type of player, get ready to be extremely frustrated.

I also got softlocked in the Blood Swamps, there was a secret fight that I couldn't get into because of a invisible wall not letting me advance.

And then I made it to the final battle against Davoth.. holy f*cking sh*t, WHO the f*ck in id software came up with this colossal disaster of a fight? and how did it get the approval to make it into the game?? That was without a doubt the WORST boss fight I've EVER played in my god damn life. And this is not just me hating it for no reason, there's THOUSANDS of people who feel the same. It took me almost a f*cking hour to finally beat it, and it was so god damn frustrating I had to keep lowering the difficulty because there was no way to get it done in a reasonable amount of time without losing my sanity.

About Davoth's fight - SPOILER ALERT, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK
Who the hell in id had the cool idea of making it very hard to trigger Davoth's short range attack? and then if you miss your shot or you get too close or you don't move out of the way quickly enough, he hits you and the very little damage you made in 5 minutes it's all gone because when he hits you he heals, and he heals way too god damn much. You end up losing a lot of progress and you gotta re-do the entire dance all over again just to recover, and then pray that after landing a hit again, he won't hit you back and throw away all your effort in just 2 seconds again. I had to lower so much the difficulty that I felt cheated, I did not enjoy this battle at all. I was just glad it was over once I defeated him, because that sh*t was mentally exhausting

          You could've done better id

part two is somehow more difficult and easier than part one, overall it felt easier and the new additions feel lazier than the first DLC, the second to last level, last arena was soooooooo hard it felt like it belonged to part one, and the final boss is a battle of attrition and waiting for him to do "the move" good for A mini boss merauder but not very fun for a huge boss, the music is just as forgetable as part two. and to be honest this DLC just reminds me of the bad parts of part one with nothing really cool to make it stand out. and ohh yeah the hammer thing pure buns, too cheesy.

The Dark Lord is probably one of the most infuriating fights I've ever had the displeasure of enduring, it uses the worst mechanic to be put in a DOOM game, the Marauder's mechanic and NOTHING else. He heals if you hit him at the wrong moment, or get hit. 6 TIMES! 6 DAMN PHASES OF JUST THAT! Like, the environments (especially Immora) are beautiful but the DL boss is just so bad that I'd recommend that you just watch a Let's Play instead of buying this.

TAG 2 tries to apply a bandaid fix to the chaos issue in the form of the Sentinel Hammer.
The Sentinel Hammer clearing the board is the only fun part of TAG 2. It is easy to charge, simple to use, and versatile.
However, it is very obvious that its purpose was to give back the breathing room the DLCs takes away from you.

Adding onto the Spirits and Blood Makyr, TAG 2 then adds more enemies onto the pile of "you need to use (insert weapon here) because we say so" In the form of the Armoured Baron, Cursed Imps and the Stone Imps.

          The Armoured Baron is conceptually fine, but frustratingly limited in a "because the devs said so" manner;
His armour can only be broken using Plasma weapons. A step in the right direction to at least let me pick which Plasma weapon to use, by why do only Plasma weapons work?
The Mancubus has a variant with armour as well, and that is broken by any type of damage, what makes the Armoured Barons pieces of metal scrap so special that its immune to everything else?

The Stone Imps make zero sense as a concept; i have 2 separate shotguns in my kit, they use the same ammo pool, why does only one shotgun, on one specific mod work?
If the Sentinel Hammer also works for them, why cant i use things like missiles, the assault rifles armour piercing round, why are we limiting more of the kit for the sake of difficulty, when the difficulty makes no sense?

The Cursed Prowlers are more just annoying, they stop you from dashing and jumping, taking away your movement ability in a game that needs you to be constantly moving, and the only way to kill them is with a Blood Punch, while they themselves are constantly moving away from you.
This turns the Prowler from a "watch your back" enemy to "tag! Youre it!" in the middle of the gun fight. +forced to burn a blood punch

With these enemies placed into the sandbox, its like throwing a wrench into the works of the entire thing. It no longer flows naturally regardless of your playstyle, its forcing you to play a certain way
Eternal over 2016 tried to limit ammo and it flowed pretty well. Eternal teaches the player that the sandbox is the point, TAG keeps treating that sandbox like its something the designers need to override.

Get to the end of the DLC, hoping that the "big fight" with the Dark Lord is memorable, right?
Uninspired is an understatement. A glorified Marauder that sounds like hes having an asthma attack in that giant mech suit.
The only differences between him and any other Marauder is an inflated health pool, he summons demons and wolves instead of simply the wolves.

He has a couple of attacks that, if he hits you or you hit him, give him armour, mimicking the player
The armour mechanic is the only unique piece of the entire fight. Punishing the player of haphazardly shooting instead of learning is a good thing, but a single good mechanic, does not save an entirely boring fight

all in all just play doom eternal.
